Sheep are one of the most plentiful and useful mobs encountered in Minecraft. They can often be found wandering aimlessly throughout the Overworld. The main purpose of sheep is to supply Wool and Raw Mutton. An adult sheep measures 1.

Like sheep in the real world, they walk on all fours. Sheep naturally spawn with wool colored white, black, gray, light gray, brown, and rarely pink. The majority have white coats. Natural sheep colors occur as follows:. Through the use of dyesit is possible to change a sheep's coat to any dye colour:. When the sheep spawns, its wool will constantly cycle through the 16 possible colors with a fading rainbow effect. The color of wool a disco sheep will drop is unaffected by its rainbow coloring.

Instead, it will drop wool of its original color before the rainbow effect was added. Illager Evokers turn all blue sheep in the world red. If there are blue sheep around, Evokers can get distracted by this task during a raid. Sheep are passive mobs that wander around the overworld.

When they encounter an obstacle, they will often try to jump over it sometimes even when the obstacle cannot be overcome. They run away when attacked. They will make no attempt to stay out of Waterand it is common to see several sheep bobbing in the water, along with other animals.

Sheep often Spawn in groups of All sheep behave the same, regardless of color. Naturally, sheep will roam around and eat Grass. When a sheep eats grass, they make a crunching sound similar to that of placing down or walking on a Dirt block. After consuming grass, the block the sheep has eaten from will become bare dirt, until grass regrows on it. In the case of Tall Grassthe block will just vanish. Sheep can easily be farmed by placing them within a Fenced area since they cannot jump out.

Sheep will follow a player while Wheat is held in their hand. They can be difficult to 'corral' into a fenced area without wheat because they tend to run to the nearest opening in the fence or exit through a hole. One method to capturing sheep is to dig a 2-block-deep hole. Make it as wide as desired. Sheep can be pushed in, led in with wheat, or one can simply wait for them to fall in themselves.

Lure them to an underground producing station or somewhere with a roof over it to keep wolves away. Pigscowsand many other land mobs can be caught in this way as well. When a sheep is sheared, their skin will be exposed and polka-dotted white. The patches are always white this won't happen in the Bedrock Editionregardless of the color of the wool. Their ears are also exposed at the sides of their heads.

Sheep will regrow their wool sometime after they have been shearedthough, in order for them to do this, they will need to eat grass or tall grass. It can capture sheep and mobs that go on the ground even slimes but not chicken or pigs because they can go under the fence where the rail comes in. The pen needs to be full otherwise the cart gets stuck inside, i'm working on a system that drops the animals into a water stream and brings them to you will post it soon. Hope you find the idea helpful and entertaining tho :.

They have to have a power supply going to them maybe a redstone torch underneath or next to it. Powered rails work by setting them down on a solid block and putting a redstone torch beside it or putting redstone connecting the rail to a button, or by using detector rails on both sides of the powered rail vertically. I keep meaning to draw up a plan of ours as there has been a few questions about this. Ours is designed for up to 10 sheep but easy to increase numbers by simply increasing the holding pen. Ours has the rectangular holding pen, and a gate that swings around in an arc to force the sheep into the race. The race has three gates at the end, one to the paddock, one to the other paddock, and one back into the holding pen. The race holds up to 3 full grown sheep at a time - plenty for us to handle at once.

It's a bit hard to see from this. If anyone wants me to draw it up I can do so with measurements etc Very nice Tigger. The pen as there is a good depth of grass in there would also be good if one of your ewes tried to reject its lamb in the coming season. There would be good shelter and feed to keep her confined for a day or two so that she got used to it. Of course that is only if you have a stroppy ewe who does the good old "it tickles" and therefore won't stand for the lamb.

Mine has a gate at the front to one pen, a gate at the side to another, and I could even shove them back out the race into the pen they started from, but two options is enough as you can always run one lot through twice if further sorting is needed. My race is cattle width mmwhich has it's pros and cons. Biggest con being the damn things can turn around and move back and forth so it's difficult to keep tabs on which ewe is which.

I use chalk to mark any I've done something to so I don't accidently inject or whatever the same one twice. Oh gods yes, certainly use chalk cheap to buy from any farming store and come in a range of colours. Our pens are also movable sort of look like large metal gates that fit together so it makes it handy if wanting to do something to the sheep before moving them into a new paddock.

We can set them up on the new paddock side, open the gate and drive them in to the pens before letting them out into their new paddock.

Our new neighbours who don't have pens at all - still to be built borrowed them and found it a breeze to draft off the lambs from their mums using that method, the only problem was that the ground looked flat but wasn't, and required a bit of Kiwi ingenuity baling twine to hold a couple of sides together. This site works best with JavaScript enabled.

Just wondering how big you can make an outdoor animal pen before Animals start despawning and spawning inside them. In case you dont follow, I've built a Barn thats about 17X30 which is placed inside of a fenced in "pasture" about 60x80 or so. After I bred about 10 or so cows inside the fenced in area, I noticed pigs and sheep spawning inside the pasture with the cows.

Then I noticed cows beginning to despawn and soon the whole thing was pointless.

I only wanted cows inside this area. Sheep go elsewhere I understand most people just keep the animals inside the barn but that isnt very realistic as dairy and beef cows need to graze So my question is how big can I make the pasture fenced off area outside of the barn before the game just thinks its another piece of land.

Thanks for your time. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack. If an animal can't move more than 20 blocks in any direction, it shouldn't despawn.

Quote from padware. I appreciate the replies. As for the theory about the animals somehow getting through the fence I can tell you right now its nothing to do with that.

I now keep them in the barn where 10 - 15 cows are constantly pressing up against the fence and they never make it through. Also, I personally saw a pig and a cow despawn from the area from quite a distance away. Im almost certain its the sheer size of the pen thats making them despawn. Quote from Plexx This happens to me too.

I had a bunch of cows and they were all gone an hour later. Guess a UFO came by. Yesterday I decided to start an experiment. I now have 5 different pens fenced off areas each with a single sheep in it, which I have dyed yellow to ensure that it's a unique animal ie not an animal that despawned and respawned. The 5 pens range from 3x3 to 7x7.You can get wool by shearing sheep, killing sheepor crafting it out of string.

Arqade is a question and answer site for passionate videogamers on all platforms. It only takes a minute to sign up. Since sheep are now persistent in Minecraft, whats the best way of herding them into a pen or farm? Our current solution is to use a combination of fishing poles, buckets of water, and simply pushing the sheep till they all fall down a 1-space wide hole, then herd them using water to our underground farm.

I saw an interesting design somewhere where the player made an enclosed pen using fences, and put stairs around the edges so the animals could be pushed up the stairs and into the pen, but couldn't escape.

You could also use a system of water canals to try to bring sheep farther away closer, making the task of pushing them into the pen less cumbersome. Use your body to push the sheep into the pen, and then have a hinged gate to open and close the pen at will. Actually, what I found out today is that if you pull out some wheat and hold it in your hand, sheep and pigs will follow you around if you walk slow enough. I saw it earlier when I was feeding my sheep and farming at the same time and I brought out some wheat by accident and seeing as how you feed wild dogs meat to tame them, I figured why not try it out?

If you continue to walk into them you'll eventually go through them, so you just have to nudge them, sort of. It's not lag. In the current version of Minecraft, there are now two ways of more easily herding animals. Wheat - Hold it in your hand without clicking the sheep and they will follow you.

If you are herding other animals, wheat will herd cows, carrots herd pigs, and seeds herd chickens.
